This is a fabulous Antique English Hallmarked clothing or valet brush with a Sterling Silver Repousse top. It could have also been used as an
equine brush. The top has a round hanging ring and the side is hallmarked with three images.
The first mark on the left is a right facing lion, the center is almost indistinguishable and the right mark is what looks to be the Italic letter "I"?
A right facing lion is unusual and typical of pseudo-marks used by New York area wholesalers in the early to mid 19th century - those marks have been attributed to the silversmith Benjamin Gurnee of New York, NY. The dating is probably around the year 1850. The letter "I" would also indicate the mid 19th century.
The brush has natural animal bristles probably wild boar. It is a lovely piece and in excellent condition.
A great find.
