The most splendid find! This fabulous silver plated antique English dinner gong dates way back to the late 1800's.
The British Gong has now become one of the most collectible antiques and is highly sought after. They are all very different and designed in many ways. This one has a most enchanting sound and an great aesthetic appeal visually. The mallet is original and still has it's time worn sheepskin covering.

This piece is hallmarked with "William Hutton & Sons".
The firm was established in Birmingham in 1800 by William Hutton, and was transferred to Sheffield in 1832. After the founder's death the business was continued under the style of William Hutton by his son William Carr Hutton. The firm was transformed in William Hutton & Sons in 1864 and William Hutton & Sons Ltd from 1893 to 1930. In 1930 goodwill transferred to James Dixon & Sons Ltd.

As was the custom in most British Estates the servants used a gong to announce dinner on a day to day basis.
The first footman sounded the gong at 7pm to alert the family and their guests that it is time to go up to dress for dinner.
It was this tradition that became a vital part of the English aristocratic lifestyle and many saw it in play while watching the Downton Abbey PBS Series.

We adore this piece!
