Beautiful Vintage Sterling Silver Plate British Bread Basket with Handle
A lovely Antique Sterling Silver Plate bread basket with handle. This piece has some lovely details and cut work and site on an oval pedestal base. This serving piece has a hallmark that reads 'W & H' "Walker & Hall ~ Sheffield ~ 2639 A1 a".
The flag in the Hallmark is a style that was stamped in the very early 1900's. The lower case 'a' is also indicative of the early 1910's or 1920's.

The business was established in Sheffield in 1845 by George Walker. Becoming an assistant of Dr. John Wright who had conducted important experiments on electroplating Walker secured the royalty of electroplating for Sheffield. The business was joined by Henry Hall and became in 1853 Walker & Hall. The factory was at Howard Street, Sheffield, while showrooms were opened in 45 Holbornn Viaduct, London.
